When do you need to see an emergency dentist?
We have included some of the common problems our patients experience. There are many people just like you who have Dental problems either because of a busy lifestyle or fear of going to the dentist - there is nothing to fear with The LED Group. Our Dentists are caring and understanding of your needs, and cater for all problems no matter how big or small they may seem. With a positive experience we plan to have you back in control of your teeth and enjoying using them for the rest of your life. | Toothache | Toothache is usually due to irritation to the inner part of the tooth (pulp). This can arise from decay under a filling. Depending on the type of irritation, the tooth can be hot or cold sensitive. When you visit one of our dentists they will carefully examine the cause of the problem, take an X ray around the entire tooth (Periapical) and discuss with you the solution. There are many causes for tooth ache and the specialist clinician will help reassure you of the type of treatment required to get you out of pain. Within a few minutes of applying local anesthetic your pain will disappear. Please note that after treatment to a painful tooth it is normal to experience pain for a few days, this is best controlled with painkillers. However, if pain persists or worsens then please contact the dentist. |

Sometimes existing cracks in the tooth worsen and eventually part of the tooth breaks. To prevent loss of the tooth, we advise you see an LED Group dentist to minimize the extent of damage. If you are experiencing an intense shooting pain on release of pressure, you may have “cracked cusp syndrome” which is a hairline crack within the tooth. This must be examined as soon as possible by an LED Group Clinician to determine the best option of treatment.

| | Top of the Page | | | Abscess and Facial Swelling | This is a very serious condition, requiring urgent attention. An infection forms within the tooth when the nerve of the tooth is dead, this can originate from decay in the tooth or infection from within the gum, the infection spreads around the tooth itself, sometimes causing the bone around the tooth to erode this can lead to a dull ache, severe throbbing, headaches and difficulty in sleeping. It is vitally important that the infection is controlled as soon as possible to prevent spreading of the infection. This is either via root canal drainage with Local Anaesthetic often combined with Antibiotic therapy and painkillers, or in the worst case, tooth removal. Abscess is a pocket of infective pus that builds around the tooth. |
| | Top of the Page | | | Wisdom tooth pain | This usually causes a dull jaw ache, earache, difficulty in opening your mouth and sometimes a bad taste in your mouth, there are a few reasons why Wisdom teeth give so much pain, the main reason is due to insufficient room for eruption, (impaction). When you attend an LED Group clinician, an X ray is taken of the tooth and the surrounding area, to decide the best course of treatment. If you have already had your wisdom tooth removed and you are experiencing extreme pain around the socket, you may have a ‘dry socket’, which requires immediate attention at the clinic, a medicated dressing is often placed, this soothes the pain quickly and allows the socket to heal.
Treatment for Wisdom teeth This is dependant on the history of the problem; upper wisdom teeth tend to be less complicated than lower wisdom teeth to remove, although your London Emergency Dentist will discuss with you the best treatment option, which can sometimes be localized cleaning and monitoring.

| | Top of the Page | | | Lost Crown/Filling/Bridge | | When a filling or crown comes out it is important to see a Dentist as soon as possible, to prevent further complications with the tooth. A filling or crown which falls out is usually indicative of a damaged tooth, so quick assessment and treatment can help prevent tooth loss, infection and reduce the need for extensive dental treatment. |

| | Dental Accidents / Trauma | If you have undergone an accident involving your face or teeth, it is very important to seek professional dental assistance as soon as possible to improve the chances of saving your teeth. A full assessment of the damaged area is taken and a treatment plan is made to help save your teeth. If a tooth has been Avulsed (completely removed) store it in milk or in your cheek until you can attend an appointment, where the Dentist will attempt to re-implant the tooth, ideally within 1 hour.
Splinting is a method of saving loose teeth immediately after an accident.
